We’ve put together a few tips for packing your removal boxes and moving home. This list is not exhaustive but it covers the basics and is a useful guide at a time when there are so many things to remember.

  • Use your move as an opportunity to get rid of any unwanted clutter. Clear out everything you don’t need before you start packing.

  • Don’t leave your removal packing until the last minute. Start early by packing up items that you don’t need every day, as packing will undoubtedly take longer than you think.

  • Make sure you have a selection of various sizes of removal or storage boxes. Fill larger removal boxes with light items and smaller boxes with heavier items. This makes them easier to handle.

  • Try not to use single walled boxes (although these are OK for packing small items like DVDs or CDs) as they are not as protective as double walled boxes. The extra strength in double walled removal boxes means that they can  be stacked on top of each other in the removal van or put into storage without allowing your valuables to get damaged.

  • Make use of Cardboard Wardrobe boxes – they save a lot of packing time and mean that you don’t have as much unpacking to do at your new home.

  • Pack one room at a time. Mark each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. Clearly label any boxes which contain breakables.

  • Make sure you inform your utility companies of your move:
    Gas
    Water
    Electricity
    Telephone
    Broadband
    Cable/Satellite

  • Don’t forget to inform these services too:
    Post (Redirect)
    Milk
    Window Cleaner
    Cleaners
    Newspapers

  • Before You Leave –
Take final meter readings and switch off all utilities
Empty bins & leave a note about collection times
Leave out all keys for outbuildings, garages etc

  • When you arrive –
Always put up the beds first so you can get a good night’s sleep
Switch on the utilities and take meter readings
Check all the keys to the property & keep one on you at all times

We hope that by listing these home movers’ tips we may just help you avoid some of the usual pitfalls when leaving your old home and help you settle into your new home a bit easier. We can’t guarantee that everything will run smoothly on the day but at least you’ll be well prepared!
